Michael Sobola

Mine Geology Expert AAusIMM | MNMGS

Michael Sobola is a highly accomplished mine geologist and resource strategist with over 15 years of experience leading geological exploration, grade control, and production geology programs across Australia and West Africa. Recognized for his technical rigor and pragmatic leadership, Michael has been instrumental in optimizing geological workflows, reducing operational risk, and enhancing ore recovery in both greenfield and brownfield mining projects.

Currently serving at Fortescue Metals Group’s Cloudbreak site, Michael oversees hydrogeological drilling, aquifer testing, and land-use compliance as part of mine dewatering and groundwater development programs. Previously, as Mine Geologist at Agile Mining Services, he managed grade control, pit inspections, short-term block modeling, and in-pit reconciliation — ensuring quality assurance and improving field confidence across iron ore operations.

Michael’s experience also spans large-scale exploration, production logging, and geological interpretation with Dasobam Limited, Geoplex Drillteq, and Transocean (Matpatson Petroleum), where he led seismic interpretations, RC drilling campaigns, MWD/LWD operations, and hydrogeological mapping. His multidisciplinary exposure has seen him contribute to energy, gold, bitumen, and groundwater projects — combining geological expertise with commercial insight.

Beyond technical skills, Michael brings proven capability in mentoring field teams, managing contractors, and embedding a high-performance culture across technical services. He is a certified member of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AAusIMM) and the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS), and is highly proficient in tools like Surpac, ArcGIS, QGIS, and Coreplan.
